Under a cold moon, in a respectable house, with a garden that extended to a river and a wood, Miss Prism took note of the disturbed earth under the cherry tree, while Rococo had seen the remnants of a night dress in the burnt-out bonfire.

‘When exactly’, said Miss Prism, ‘Did this child disappear’?
