The shape of Diane’s life was wrong – she was neither a tragic heroine or a social butterfly – she sat by the window thinking of the things that failed to happen, the opportunities lost, the love affairs causally dropped and now painfully yearned for.

And as she peered into the darkness she saw a shape approaching the house, this large looming mass, increasing, not stopped by stone.
